Hurdy Gurdy Fandango
Lyrics: John Popper
Music: John Popper

Son of a bitch he took me like he did before
I had a little cash but I don't got no more
I'm talking about the man I met the other day
I was just walking along the street and liked the things he'd say
He said "Now son, I can remember back to Coney Isle
Back in the grand old days when they had regall style
I had a home-made hurdy gurdy for a nickel or dime
We made the people dance we'd have a real good time

And he said "Oh
Oh you kids today
Don't appreciate the things that you don't have"
And when he said this I appreciated him and I began to laugh
Cause if he had the chance he'd like to make you dance
But he's a victim of his time and of his circumstance
He'd like to hurdy gurd just like you never heard

He went on to elaborate his little tale of woe
It was so interesting that I just could not go
He spoke how played for king and queen and how he cried
When back in '58 his favorite monkey died
He asked me if I had a dollar, could I buy him a bite
I knew if I had the cash he would go on on all night
He spoke of love as he had found it every now and again
And in such great detail he recalled where and when

And he said "Oh
You kids today
Don't know what's up and I'm too tired to tell you why"
When he said this I just laughed it off but secretly I wished that he would try
Because if he had the chance he'd like to make you dance
But he's a victim of his time and of his circumstance
He'd like to hurdy gurd just like you never heard

Well time was wearing on and it was getting light
And the hurdy gurdy man and me were getting tight
I felt like I was making a bro, you know, a friend for life
Like he'd be taking me to his house and I'd be meeting his wife
But I as soon as all the food and all the money were gone
He got up to depart like he was moving on
I was stunned, all I could say was "Hey where will you go?"
When in a dark brown voice he said "Perhaps I'll let you know

Yeah you kids today
Let this be a lesson to you boy
My bundles and my baggage
Are my life and not some goddamn toy"

Yeah you kids today
Let this be a lesson to you all
Study not my misery to avoid
Because everybody falls
Yes, everybody falls
Everybody falls

Because if he had the chance he'd like to make you dance
But he's a victim of his time and of his circumstance
He'd like to hurdy gurd just like you never heard
