Random Amounts
Lyrics: John Popper
Music: John Popper

Pinter built himself a machine to travel back in time
He had a plan that couldn't fail
To predict anything and everything for the next 100 years
He brought iwth him newspapers and stock reports, racing forms
And off-shore drill site deeds as yet untapped
Basically the knowledge to ensure his power for all time
As if a god on earth with chicks and cars and options

But as it happened things just kept going wrong with his scheme
As if history was changing for his undoing
Einstein never got credit for the theory of relativity
This time it was some really smart guy named Vince
And the market never crashed in '29
But instead in '42
The same year some house painter was committed to the booby hatch
And this upset Pinter terribly because he'd never been born
And that meant that all of his stuff was gone
Or at least had been redistributed
Besides how could he live without Katia, the love of his life
Who'd surely moved on by now
And found somebody else more worth her time

When he realized his mistake
That no one's destiny is set
That fickle chance controls our fate
Pinter wept
For all that he held dear and sought to gain
Seemed worthless in such a crap shoot world
And the one thing he'd lost mattered only
And that was the love he'd never meet
And ironically he cursed those options

And on the blackest ice I'll stand
(Sometimes you lose sometimes you win)
A jagged scissor in my hand
(Well that'll tell you where I've been)
And if that's seen as being smart
Or if it's seen as being dumb
I still will have to trust my heart
And just take what comes
Yeah I will win and I will lose
But rather I will try and I will choose
'Cause if there is one thing I have found
You get it all in random amounts

Onyx had a laparoscopic band around her brain
Wore corrective lenses
So she wouldn't look insane
-ly at her friends and loved ones
Through the clatter of her din
Her pleading eyes could not convey the turmoil she was in

She was imagining or remembering
To her it really was the same
A different time when she had love
And Katia was her name
It was so like a dream
But for the love she hadn't met
As though this time he wasn't born
But she could not forget

She called his name out every day
His name and only his
As I recall his name was Vince
A brilliant physics wiz

Well if you're driving in your car
(Stay to the right of the yellow line)
Or juggling scorpions in jars
(You know I do it all the time)
And if your car ever fails to break
Or if your jar of scorpions does
Try to survive; don't regret your mistake
Do you think you could even spot which one it was
Yeah I will win and I will lose
But rather I will try and I will choose
'Cause if there is one thing I have found
You get it all in random amounts

I wish that I could be like Injiro, Syd, or Stan
Three relative unknowns
Who got the world in the palm of their hand
Suped up civilian soldiers with a growing web of concern
Drove beneath a super highway
And they listened to it burn
Shaniqua rang the president to complain about the noise
They took her away within a week
For making films of little boys
Ebenezer was a student working nights for his degree
Saw potential in the invention any other genius didn't see

Hector was a Wall Street wiz worth a billion dollar note
Mr. X was his accountant who had to keep the ship afloat
And then there's Star who's arrested for howling at the moon
Joe Lee scored his big movie deal and it's coming out in June
And maybe God just keeps the memoirs of all the accidents out there
The best laid plans of mice and men just falling through the air

Yeah I will win and I will lose
But rather I will try and I will choose
'Cause if there's one thing I have found
You get it all in random amounts
We are all so desperate to see
The proof of any form of karmic symmetry
But the only kind that's truly out there
Is only happening while we are unaware
Like when I wake I'm always reaching for you
It's simply that which is my tendency to do
Yeah I will win and I will lose
But rather I will try and I will choose
'Cause if there's one thing I have found
You get it all in random amounts

Nothing ever really happened to John and his friends
As they were so shy and subdued, reading quietly to themselves
