The Way
Lyrics: John Popper
Music: John Popper

Nobody told me it would be good
But I still wanted it to be
Do your homework like you should
Hoping something sets you free (What'll it be)
Afraid of ultimate decay
Never stopping but to rust
Eager to get it underway
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust (If you must)

And if you want to worship truth
And be it medicine, meditation or God or the evening news
Or a fairy tale I sing to you
And there's an answer when you pray
The way of things, there is a way
The way of things, there is a way
There is a way
By it you learn you will increase
A million ways to hear its voice
And you will finally feel aware
That you're a part of everywhere

You tell me God is dead
Well I say God always was
Life, death, living and dying all at the same time
You know, that's all it ever does
Could be God is our idea
And ideas never die
Created in its image
We seek its light from up on high (Give it a try)

And if you want to worship truth
And be it medicine, meditation or God or the evening news
Or a fairy tale I sing to you
And there's an answer when you pray
The way of things, there is a way
The way of things, there is a way
There is a way
The way of things, there is a way
By it you learn you will increase
A million ways to hear its voice
And you will finally feel aware
That you're a part of everywhere

I wanna try to play the way
That R2-D2 beeps and squeaks and tells you everything

You know there's so much else to say
The infinite eternal chase
The quenching of the thirst

And if you want to worship truth
Be it medicine, meditation or God or the evening news
Or a fairy tale I sing to you
There is an answer when you pray
The way of things, there is a way
The way of things, there is a way
There is a way
The way of things, there is a way

By it you learn you will increase
You will affect your own release
A million ways to hear its voice
And in the end you've got no choice
You will finally feel aware
That you're a part of everywhere
And there's an answer when you pray
The way of things, there is a way
There is a way
The way of things, there is a way...

Song information:
The public debut of this song was a resounding flop - John and Bob got the chord progression mixed up but kept it that way for the entire song.
The original chorus of this tune was truncated in the recorded version, though it can be heard in its entirety at the end of the song, as well as partially in the background voices during the new chorus.
This was a song originally destined for The Sun, The Storm, & The Traveler.

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
A common line from a funeral prayer. See "Whoops".
And there's an answer when you pray
Possibly a rephrasing of the Biblical passage "ask and ye shall receive", from John, chapter 16, verse 24.
You tell me God is dead
Have you heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly, "I seek God! I seek God!" As many of those who do not believe in God were standing around just then, he provoked much laughter...

Whither is God," he cried. "I shall tell you. We have killed him - you and I. All of us are murderers.... God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him...

- Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science (1882), section 126
Created in its image
A reference to Genesis, chapter 1, verse 26: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness"
I wanna try to play the way/ That R2-D2 beeps and squeaks and tells you everything
R2-D2 is a robot character from the "Star Wars" trilogy who communicates by means of sounds that are unintelligible to anyone else but the translation droid C-3PO. This line seems to be John poking fun at himself and his choice of instrument, which also "beeps and squeaks", but he feels that he does not communicate nearly as much or as well as R2-D2 manages to.
