![]() By the time the third migration of the Great American H.O.R.D.E. rolled around, it was finally finding its legs and traversing the country with an aggressive schedule and larger-name bands on the traveling marquee. Long-time friends the Allman Brothers Band signed on for the full tour after two shows the year before, and younger acts included then little-known but soon to be huge Sheryl Crow and Dave Matthews Band. The itinerary covered 31 dates over an eight-week stretch, with only one break in mid-August for several bands to hit Woodstock II in Saugerties, NY. Woodstock ended up being a partial H.O.R.D.E. date in its own right, with the Allman Brothers, Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow, and H.O.R.D.E. alumnus the Spin Doctors making appearances. But for the rest of the summer, H.O.R.D.E. reigned over the lives of these bands, filling amphitheaters from Maine to California. Prior to the first gig of H.O.R.D.E. '94, members of the Allman Brothers, Blues Traveler, and Sheryl Crow's band crammed into Shooter's, a club in the Flats of Cleveland, to watch a set by a local band called Oroboros. John Popper joined the band for its last few songs, and then the rest of the musicians took over, rocking the house for a full two hours with Allman Brothers staples and old blues covers. This gig was an early precursor to what would later become the so-called "jam stage"; John Popper and Warren Haynes would occasionally enlist other musicians in impromptu jams between sets while the crew was changing the stages over between acts. Additionally, the third year of H.O.R.D.E. saw much more cross-pollination than in years past - while 1992's edition saw full-band segues, this year's version had everyone sitting in with everyone else, ranging from Sheryl Crow lending vocals to the Allmans' "Midnight Rider" to Warren Haynes and Arnie Lawrence blistering their way through "Mountain Cry", and John Popper everywhere in between.
